Mentoring For Students

 

Why does a student require Mentoring?

If you are a student looking to somehow clear your course and get the degree, then you don't need a Mentor.  The only problem with education is that it is never your own agenda but always someone else's; parents, teachers, society, etc.  It is okay till matriculation which is primarily literacy with a bit of something more. 

Continuing beyond secondary education should be a matter of personal choice; really.  Most children are actually done with education by then and after that life is only about suffering and torture of the shoulds and the musts. You shouldn't be learning sciences because you have a good score, but because you have an interest in them.  

However, the reality is that you do not have a choice but to tag your parents' or society's dictates.  

Agreed, but it is your life, is it not?  Can you at least learn how to be at your best even when you are pursuing something that doesn;t actually interest you?  There are certainly going to be many such circumstances in life when you will be working under compulsions, much against your wishes. 

Unfortunately,  even college education in most countries is simply an extension of school.  That is such a pity! What should have been a privilege, if not a rare one, has been reduced to sheer suffering because most people don't want to be in the course they are in or the college or university. 

This has nothing to do with grades, ranks, or marks. Life in apathy starts so early for most, that very soon they do not know any other way of living.  Enthusiasm remains something one should have but no one seems to have it.  When was the last time you woke up all excited for a day of life?

Every year more than 200 K students pass out of colleges with a B.Tech degree.  How many, do think, are anywhere close to doing any real engineering at all?  How many B.B.A or M.B.A students know anything about Business or Management?  B.Coms know very little or nothing about accounting, finance, or mercantile law, B.Sc students are no different.  Deterioration in standards of education and the educated is extremely alarming and so is our levels of satisfaction in life. It is very shocking when you consider the amount of information they have been cramming for 12 to 16 years!

Look, the education system is to be blamed for many things.  But will that change the quality of your life?  Society may undergo a change sooner or later, but can you wait a lifetime for that to happen?  Are you going to waste a lifetime blaming your luck?  

The sad part is that most people stop investing in educating themselves once they pass out and pick a job or profession.  They will become parents and put their children through the same drudgery but never come around to seeing education as an investment by choice.
